Woodface: George Woodman’s Honda SS50 custom moped

7. September 2016 Gepostet von Unknown 0 Kommentare
Woodface: George Woodman's Honda SS50 custom moped
Punk’s Peak is a highlight of the growing Wheels & Waves festival in France. It’s a hill climb that happens on the Jaizkibel, a mountain just over the border in Spain and less than an hour’s ride from the festival grounds in Biarritz.
When entries opened for this year’s race, George Woodman couldn’t help himself. Woodman—who is known to his friends as Sébastien Valliergues—actually lives in Biarritz, and put his name down without hesitation.

There was one small problème: he didn’t have a bike to race. With just two months to go, he set to work.
“The inspiration for this one was the Sultans of Sprint,” Woodman tells us. “But the only bike that I had in my hands was this little Honda SS50. A fun challenge!”
Woodface: George Woodman's Honda SS50 custom moped
He’s called this little custom moped La Chute. It’s French for ‘the fall,’ but it’s also used to refer to pieces of wood left over when making furniture.
“The wooden parts of La Chute were made from pieces lying around my atelier,” says Woodman. “It’s a mix of Birch multi-ply and Paulownia wood.”

The little Honda is now capped at both ends with charming handcrafted pieces. Between them are a hand-made seat and the stock fuel tank.
Woodman has re-mounted the tank at a more pleasing angle though, and fettled the subframe to match the new tail unit. The swing-arm is a custom job—set up to take a larger 18-inch rear wheel with a drag tire.

The rearset foot pegs and controls are mounted directly to the swingarm. But the bike’s now running super-stiff springs, so there’s not much movement. “It nearly feels like a rigid frame,” Woodman tells us.
At the front, the forks and 18” wheel are reproduction Honda Dream units, with a disc brake for extra stopping power. The strange black discs are from a BMX: “I put them on at the beginning to have more space for sponsor stickers, but right now it’s just for looking good!”

Woodman needed a little go to match the show, so he’s installed a tuned 190cc, 4-valve Daytona pitbike engine. “It was prepared by Stomp 777, the best guy in France for this kind of engine,” he says.
A minimal cockpit with clip-ons and new controls finish things off. Lighting is limited to a small taillight, and a yellow headlight behind the fairing’s ‘smiley.’ Both run off a small, rechargeable battery.

Woodman finished his custom moped racer the day before Punk’s Peak: “I had time to test and adjust it in a huge parking lot,” he says, “spending a complete fuel tank. It really moves fast—the acceleration is mad!”
Sadly, fog set in and Punk’s Peak was cancelled. But Woodman is already planning future races, and he’s been taking the SS50 out for sneaky rides on the road too.

“It’s a competition bike—not street legal,” he admits. “But in France—as my Swiss friend says—it’s république bananière!”
“I’ve taken the risk several times, and it’s a really cool machine. So light: only 82kg for 27 horsepower. Corners can be tricky with the drag tire, but with attention it works.”

“And whatever,” he shrugs. “It is a sprint bike.”

Perfect 10: Auto Fabrica’s BMW R80

23. Oktober 2015 Gepostet von Unknown 0 Kommentare
The Perfect 10: A custom BMW R80 from Auto Fabrica.
By the late 1980s, the simple, classic styling of most BMW airheads had turned gawky. The R80 RT was especially afflicted: its enormous fairing and sticky-out mirrors pleased the long-distance riders, but few others.
Thirty years later, this makes the BMW R80 a prime candidate for the Auto Fabrica treatment. The English workshop specializes in a super-clean, minimalist look—the two-wheeled equivalent of a West Coast hot rod builder, if you like.
The Perfect 10: A custom BMW R80 from Auto Fabrica.
Shop boss Bujar Muharremi recalls the day the bike arrived. “Like many of these monoshock BMW R80s, it was fully faired-up—and a bit of a late 80s mess,” he says.
“But underneath is a relatively elegant tank and a boxer engine. We actually like the airhead engine. There are certain things that look odd, but it’s character building.”

Desert Flower: möto Dubai’s Royal Enfield Bullet

Desert Flower: möto Dubai's Custom Royal Enfield Bullet 500
You’re more likely to spot an exotic sports car in Dubai than a classic custom motorcycle. Still, the bustling desert oasis hosts an eclectic blend of people—and a blossoming custom scene.
It’s also the home of möto Dubai: a relatively young outfit that recently took top honours in the recent Bikers Cafe build-off, with this unconventional Royal Enfield.
Desert Flower: möto Dubai's Custom Royal Enfield Bullet 500
möto came together when South African Antonie Robertson and German Marco Möller connected over a Honda CB350, that the former had been working on in his apartment.
“I remember Antonie showing up at my house early one day with the frame,” says Marco, “and we set about cutting off the tabs and cleaning the welds up in my front yard. I think it was a week day, and I ended up being late for work.…

Into The Woods: 654’s rippin’ Yamaha SR500

19. Oktober 2015 Gepostet von Unknown 0 Kommentare
A sleek Yamaha SR500 built to tackle the woodland trails of northern Sweden.
If there’s a two-wheeled equivalent of the VW Beetle, it’s the Yamaha SR series. The mechanicals are simple, parts are cheap, and the charm has endured over the decades. In the US, you can pick up an older SR500 in reasonable condition for $2,000 or so.
This accessibility also means a glut of customized SR400s and SR500s—but this one caught our eye. It’s a classy, textbook build from our favorite small Swedish shop, 6/5/4 Motors.
A sleek Yamaha SR500 built to tackle the woodland trails of northern Sweden.
“I bought the SR500 before we started the company,” says co-founder Johan. “I wanted a fairly small and quick bike to play around with—in town and on the gravel roads.”
Shortly after, the workshop was up and running, and a guy walked in looking for a cafe racer.…

Simply Wunderschön: Kontrast Kreations’ BMW R

13. Oktober 2015 Gepostet von Unknown 0 Kommentare
An immaculate BMW R90 resto-mod from Kontrast Kreations of Switzerland.
In the small Swiss village of Bonstetten, near Zürich, Ramon Seiler restores classic cars and motorcycles. But when he got his hands on a BMW R90/6, he decided to break character—and build his first custom.
The finish is worthy of a show bike on a manufacturer’s stand, but Ramon’s BMW R is no trailer queen. “I wanted a motorcycle for everyday use,” he says, “and one I can also take on long trips or even off-road.”

Despite being parked up for twenty years, the donor was in pretty good nick. So once Ramon got the engine running like clockwork, he turned his attention to a rather unusual mod: putting the battery into the air filter box.

No aftermarket parts are available to do that, so Ramon used the original air filter as a model and fabricated a new battery cover from 2mm aluminum sheeting.…

The Pursuit of Perfection: Eastern Spirit’s CX500

4. Oktober 2015 Gepostet von Unknown 0 Kommentare
Custom Honda CX500 by Eastern Spirit Garage.
Three years ago, Poland’s Eastern Spirit Garage exploded onto the custom scene with one of the best Honda CX500s ever built. Its immaculate lines even inspired automotive designer Charlie Trelogan to write a hugely popular guide, How To Build A Cafe Racer.
Lukas and Sylwester from Eastern Spirit are now back with another Honda CX500, and it’s even better than the first. It’s a little less raw, a little more detailed, and drop-dead gorgeous.

“I enjoy building ‘classic’ looking bikes,” Sylwester tells us, “so most of the technical elements are original, but with modern touches.”
The beautifully proportioned lines of this machine are in direct opposition to Sylwester’s background: Like Guy Martin, he’s spent much of his career working on monster Scania trucks.…

The Auto Fabrica Type 6: Reduced to perfection

18. Juli 2015 Gepostet von Unknown 0 Kommentare
An extraordinary custom Yamaha XS650 built by the English workshop Auto Fabrica.
In Japan, there is a design theory called Kanso (簡素)—meaning simplicity, or the elimination of clutter. And every time I see an Auto Fabrica bike, I’m reminded of that fine principle.
The machines that roll out of the English workshop are reduced to the bare minimum, but beautifully finished. And this extraordinary build, called simply Type 6, is Auto Fabrica’s best work yet.
An extraordinary custom Yamaha XS650 built by the English workshop Auto Fabrica.
Most shops have a bike that’s been kicking around since the beginnings of time, and that’s the story with this Yamaha. “It’s one of four XS650s we rescued from a farm in the depths of rural Cornwall,” says shop owner Bujar Muharremi. “A lucky find that effectively kickstarted our company.”
We’ve come to expect stellar levels of craft and finish from Auto Fabrica, but the Type 6 adds impeccable industrial design to the mix.…

Kawasaki W650 von Clutch

15. Juli 2015 Gepostet von Unknown 0 Kommentare
Going With The Flow: an immaculate Kawasaki W650 custom from Paris-based Clutch Motorcycles.
Before the ‘new’ Triumph Bonneville came along, there was the Kawasaki W650. And some would argue that it captured the spirit of the Meriden original even better than the later Hinckley-built Bonnie.
Willie Knoll of Paris-based Clutch Custom Motorcycles is a fan. His Bonneville T100 from last year is one of our all-time favorites, so we were keen to see his version of “Big Green’s memory machine”—as Motorcycle Classics has called the W650.
Going With The Flow: an immaculate Kawasaki W650 custom from Paris-based Clutch Motorcycles.
This latest Clutch build is based on a 2001-model Kawasaki W650. “The idea was to create a simple, classy and minimalistic motorcycle,” Willie tells us. “With a touch of drag bike styling, fine lines, and good detailing.”

Digging Deep: A rusty CB750F2 from Outsiders

23. Mai 2015 Gepostet von Unknown 0 Kommentare
Custom Honda CB750F2 by Outsiders Motorcycles.
Rusty bikes seldom garner a second glance. But this new offering from Outsiders Motorcycles warrants close inspection—because there’s a lot more at play than a little patina.
Outsiders is based in the ancient city of Groningen in The Netherlands. The shop is run by couple Bert and Jene, with help from their apprentice Lex, and this Honda CB750F2 is their seventh build to date.

“A year ago, we got a call from our client Lars,” says Bert. “He’d just bought a 1978 CB750F2, and was looking for a shop to upgrade it. So we met in Amsterdam and talked all night about the bike.”
Most of Outsiders’ customers walk into the shop with a clear plan and budget. But Lars was happy to sit back and let the crew do their thing—as long as they ran any big expenses by him first.…

Enter Sandman: French Atelier’s Yamaha TW125

16. Dezember 2014 Gepostet von Unknown 0 Kommentare
A fresh and funky custom Yamaha TW125 built by Le French Atelier.

The Yamaha TW125 is one of the oddities of the motorcycling world. It’s short, high-ridin’ and underpowered.

It doesn’t sound promising—but over the past 15 years, the TW125 has built up a strong fan base. And if you’ve ridden a fat-tired TW over the sand dunes, you’ll know how much fun it can be.

Despite its trifling capacity and 11 horses, it feels like a ‘big toy.’ And that’s the spirit Le French Atelier decided to amp up.

A fresh and funky custom Yamaha TW125 built by Le French Atelier.

LFA is a new workshop based in the western suburbs of Paris, near Versailles. It’s run by three young friends with a knack for upgrading older bikes (like this spectacular Suzuki GSX-R) and giving them a ‘neo retro’ vibe.

“For the TW125, we wanted to keep the ‘big wheel’ look, but contrast it with a smaller body,” says Vincent.…
